Deadliest Catch Tops Discovery's Emmy Nominations

Captivating viewers and critics alike, Deadliest Catch has once again been recognized by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, earning Primetime Emmy nominations in five different categories. Overall, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and TLC earned a total of nine nominations as the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Award nominations were announced today. In addition, Discovery Communications’ portfolio of networks received five News and Documentary Emmy nominations, announced on Tuesday, for informative programs featured on Discovery Channel (3), Animal Planet (1), and Investigation Discovery (1).

Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch , which captures the dangers, adventures and disasters of a fleet of crab-fishing boats on the icy Bering Sea, was honored with five nominations from the Academy in the following categories: Outstanding Nonfiction Series, Outstanding Cinematography For Nonfiction Programming, Outstanding Picture Editing For Nonfiction Programming, Outstanding Sound Mixing For Nonfiction Programming (Single Or Multi-Camera) and Outstanding Special Class - Short-Format Nonfiction Programs.

Hosted by Mike Rowe, DIRTY JOBS, a series that gets the grimy scoop on downright nasty occupations, was nominated for Outstanding Reality Program. HUMAN BODY: PUSHING THE LIMITS, a series that uses cutting-edge technology to illustrate the body’s inner workings, was recognized for Outstanding Special Visual Effects For A Series.

TLC’s LITTLE PEOPLE BIG WORLD, which captures the everyday successes and struggles of the Roloff family while presenting an intimate view of life as a little person, earned a nomination for Outstanding Musical Composition For A Series (Original Dramatic Score). Recognized for Outstanding Cinematography For Nonfiction Programming is Animal Planet’s MEERKAT MANOR, a series chronicling the dramatic tale of the Whiskers Clan trying to survive in the Kalahari.

In addition to Primetime Emmys, Discovery Communications’ networks were also recognized by the Academy with five nominations for the 29th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards. LIVING WITH CANCER and BREAKING POINT, two programs from the Discovery Channel original series KOPPEL ON DISCOVERY were nominated for Outstanding Interview and Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Craft: Editing, respectively. Rounding out the nominations for Discovery Channel with a nod for Outstanding Science, Technology and Nature Programming, was EXPEDITION TO BORNEO. Animal Planet received a nomination for Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Craft: Cinematography - Nature Documentaries/Dramatic Recreations for BUDDHA, BEES & THE GIANT HORNET QUEEN, and Investigation Discovery garnered a nomination for Best Documentary for THE KILLER WITHIN.

The Primetime Emmy Award, long considered the highest honor in television, is presented by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The 60th Primetime Emmy Awards airs live Sunday, September 21 (8:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. The show is being produced by Ken Ehrlich and will be held at the new NOKIA Theatre, L.A.Live in Los Angeles.
